Abstract (EN)

This thesis investigates the effectiveness of Tuned Liquid Damper systems for vibration control in buildings exposed to ground motions from various directions, using shake table experiments. A scaled steel model builidng was designed and constructed to represent the dynamic behavior of mid- to high-rise buildings. Ten damper tank systems with different geometries were developed and installed on the model to evaluate the performance of Tuned Liquid Damper. To simulate ground motions acting from different directions, the model building was rotated around its vertical axis in 15-degree increments and subjected to dynamic tests on a shake table using three harmonic excitations of varying amplitudes, as well as the ground motion record from the 1992 Erzincan earthquake. Water and machine oil were used as fluids in the tanks to assess the influence of fluid viscosity on vibration control. The results show that the systems are highly effective in mitigating structural vibrations. Moreover, the performance of the dampers varied or remained consistent depending on the tank geometry when the direction of ground motion changed. It was also observed that fluid viscosity plays a significant role in the overall effectiveness of the damping system.
