Özet (EN)

This study aims to examine the perception of religion among the generation born in and after the year 2000, to evaluate their understanding of religion within a broad framework, and to provide a deeper insight into their religious perceptions. Generations are influenced by the spirit and conditions of the time in which they live. The young people who have never experienced a world without the internet and social media are referred to as digital natives. In addition, this cohort is also identified with other labels such as the Crystal Generation, i- Generation, Fragile Generation, and Generation Z. Members of this generation are exposed to similar global influences through the internet while also being shaped by the traditions, cultures, and religions of their own societies. Studies conducted by Jean M. Twenge on American youth indicate that, due to the heavy influence of the internet and the overprotective nature of Generation Y parents, these young people have become increasingly isolated and distant from local cultural and religious factors. Twenge's research clearly reveals that this generation shows a tendency toward religious disengagement. Among the reasons for this are that they have grown up in an environment where expressing disbelief is socially acceptable and that their parents, the Generation Y cohort, are inconsistent in attending religious ceremonies and show low motivation in performing religious rituals. On the other hand, Shelina Janmohamed, in her studies of Muslim youth in Europe and various parts of the world, refers to this generation as the M Generation (Muslim Generation). Unlike their Western counterparts, this group does not distance itself from religious identity; instead, they integrate digital platforms and modern lifestyles with Islamic values, forming a bridge between tradition and modernity. Research on the post-2000 generation in Turkey provides valuable insights into their religious practices and perspectives. Claims that Generation Z is becoming Westernized, moving away from religion, or adopting deism and atheism often stem from an oversimplified and monolithic understanding of youth. This study aims to contribute to the literature with its findings and recommendations that prompt a reconsideration of the Generation Z generalization and claims that young people are becoming more distant from religion.
