Determination of titanium dioxide amount and carcinogenic risk in different brands of toothpaste

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it was planned to determine the TiO_2 amounts in 39 different brands of toothpastes that are widely available on the market and sold in Turkey. SEM analyzes of the toothpaste samples were performed and their morphological images were examined. Then, elemental analyzes of the samples were performed by ICP-MS and Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Sr, Ti, P, S and K concentrations were determined at ppm level. The highest TiO_2 concentration was determined in samples M-25 (8578.57 ppm), M-32 (3902.64 ppm), M-33 (14551.74 ppm). XRD analyzes were performed on samples M-25, M-32 and M-33 to find the TiO2 particle size. For M-25, M-32, M-33, 2θ values were found as 25.31°,25.41°,25.39°, respectively, and it was determined that TiO_2 was the anatase phase. Particle sizes were found as 70.80 nm, 45.50 nm, 63.62 nm, respectively. When the TiO2 amounts in toothpaste samples were evaluated in terms of carcinogenic risk, it was seen that this rate was below the risk limits.
