Prof. Dr. Feyzan ErkipMay, 2007This study focuses on the attributes affecting environmental preference fordifferent settings. In everyday life, all setting types have alternatives andeach individual make preferences within those alternatives. The mainquestion of this research is how individuals make their preferences. In thisstudy, settings are grouped under two main categories. The first category isobligatory settings that involve the settings that people need or have to usedue to the necessities of daily routine. The second category is leisuresettings and involves all the settings that people use for leisure activities.The aim of this study is to identify and prioritize attributes affectingenvironmental preference according to the setting types and for eachparticular setting. The attributes are grouped under three main headings;aesthetic, physical and behavioral. The respondents are design and non-design students from the university of Bilkent and Gazi University. Theresults indicate that attributes affecting the preferences of individuals varyaccording to the setting type (leisure/obligatory) and each particular setting.In addition, individuals? gender and educational background affect theattributes considered while making preference.Keywords: Environmental preference, leisure and obligatory settings,aesthetic, physical and behavioral attributes, design and non-designstudents.
