A study on some information literacy competencies of 7th grade students' in the context of the science course

In this study, it is aimed to determine the status of 7th grade students' in terms of some information literacy competencies in the context of science course. The sample of the study consists of 42 7th grade students studying in two different secondary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in a city located in the central region of Turkey. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group were determined by using typical case sampling method which is one of the purposive sampling methods Data was gathered through "Written Research Document", "Information Selection/Distinction Document" and "Written Opinion Form", and analyzed using rubric and content analysis. As a result of the research, it is determined that the majority of the students were sufficient in terms of the competence to define their information needs, more than half of them were partially sufficient in terms of the competence to use and convey information, but they had deficiencies in some aspects of both competences. On the other hand, it was determined that the majority of the students were insufficient in terms of finding/accessing, evaluation and ethical/legal issues competencies and they had deficiencies in many subjects related to these competencies. At the end of the study, recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.
