The relationship between social exclusion and social media addiction in science high school students; Mersin provincial

In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between the use of social media and social exclusion of science high school students. In the research, it was reached whether social media use, social exclusion levels and being ignored, which is the sub-dimension of social exclusion scale, social media usage types, purposes, durations differed according to gender and the class in which they continued, as well as the types and usage periods of social media platforms. The participants consisted of 448 people, 245 (54.7%) of whom were girls and 203 (45.3%) were boys, who were educated in science high schools in Mersin. In the study, Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents, Social Exclusion Scale and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools. The research data were evaluated by t-test, ANOVA, tukey multiple comparison and chi-square analysis. The statistics were analyzed by package program. According to the results of the research, social media addiction, ignorance and social exclusion levels differed significantly according to gender and the results obtained showed that girls' social media addiction was significantly higher. However, there was no significant differentiation between the sexes in the levels of ignorance and social exclusion. Only the average time spent on Whatsapp was found to differ significantly with the groups. According to Tukey multiple comparison analysis, it was seen that students attending the 10th grade used Whatsapp for longer than students attending the 9th grade. However, no significant differences were found for other platforms.
