Determination of opinions and ideas of science and technology teachers on alternative measurement assessment method techniques and applications

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Science and Technology teachers? perceptions of alternative measurement and evaluation methods and techniques, teachers? usage conditions of alternative measurement and evaluation methods and techniques, teachers? competences in alternative measurement and evaluation methods and techniques with respect to teachers? seniority. Cross-sectional study, which is a developmental research method, was used in this study. The sample of the study was consisted of 94 Science and Technology teachers working in Sivas Province. Questionnaire and semi-structured interview form were used for data gathering about the situation related with alternative measurement and evaluation methods and techniques. For interviews, six teachers were selected among 94 Science and Technology teachers. For the analysis of the interviews, examination of the related literature, formed table of common aims containing the reasons of usage of each alternative assessment approach were used. Alternative measurement and assessment approach was combined based on the fifth common purposes including scales, process evaluation, concept teaching, visual ability, verbal ability. The analysis of obtained quantitative data was done with ANOVA test and the analysis of qualitative data was realized with descriptive analysis. Interviews were compared with survey results. The status of teachers using these tools, teachers of competencies about these tools, the reviews of teachers instructional aspect of these tools were supported by interviews. Conclusions of the study examined in terms of teacher? seniority and presented in conclusion. It was suggested that teachers who were not aware of the alternative measurement-evaluation approaches and who considered them as unnecessary should have in-service training. It was also suggested that this in-service training should be categorized according to their durations in teaching experiences.
