The views concerning the factors which effect science and technology teachers? professional development

As one of the crucial elements of education system, teachers? professional development should be given importance in order them to provide education which compensate the needs of the modern life. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the factors which effect science and technology teachers? professional development and the views of science and technology teachers and head teachers concerning these factors.In this study, both qualitative and quantitative reserach methods were used together. Semi-structured interviews and questonnaires, developed by the researcher, were used. While the interviews allowed the researcher to analyse science and technology teachers? and head teachers? views indepthly and the questionnaires allowed the researcher to reach a large number of views concerning Professional development. This study was carried out with science and technology teachers and head teachers who work in Nevşehir. In the interviews, the sample consisted of six science and technology teachers and six head teachers who work in Nevşehir (Avanos). On the other hand, 109 science and technology teachers in Nevşehir also participated to this study by filling out the questionnaires. The data collected through interviews were analysed by descriptive analysis. For the data collected through questionnaires, statistical analysis was used.According to research evidence, teaching profession is a process which starts with pre-service teacher education and continous with in-service education. In this process, both internal and external factors effect science and technology teachers? professional development. Teachers? Professional development need to be supported. Furthermore, in-service teacher education programs also support teachers? professional development. However, the problems of in-service education programs need to be taken into consideration and steps should be taken to solve these problems.
