An approach to develop the physics student teachers' skills for preparation and implementation of teacher guided materials

SUMMARY An Approach to Develop The Physics Student Teachers' Skills for Preparation and Implementation of Teacher Guided Materials Education is a process to change behaviors and teacher is one of the crucial factors in this process. For this reason, education researchers stress the studies interested in teacher education. These studies offer new approaches for the teachers needed the knowledge and skills in teaching-learning process. In this respect, the knowledge and skills for developing and applying materials are accepted as the main qualification of teachers. In this study, an approach to develop the physics student teachers' skills for preparation and implementation of teacher guided materials was applied during Practical Section of Special Teaching Method Course (PSSTMC)-II. This study was implemented during 2002-2003 academic years at the Physics Teaching Program of Fatih Education Faculty in KTU. In the first semester, the approach was implemented with 36 physics student teachers in master program without thesis. In this process, the teacher guided materials based on different instructional methods and techniques were developed by the student teachers. Student teachers presented the developed materials in the course. While the approach was implementing, student teachers were evaluated with the forms developed and by giving feedback to them in every stage of the research. The study in the second semester was carried out with 10 student teachers in the master program without thesis. The data for the study was obtained by the surveys, observations, interviews with these students and with the documental analysis of the teacher guided materials. The findings of this study show that student teachers achieved successfully intended behaviors to develop and present teacher materials at the end of the PSSTMC-II. It was concluded that the conducted approach is one of the ideal methods to be used to perform the aims of PSSTMC-II. At the end of the study, the important suggestions were recommended those who interested in the subject area. Key Words: Special Teaching Method, Physics Student Teachers, Teacher Guided Materials. VI
