The Forty Rules of Love ve aşk romanlarının bağlamı – İki kitabın arkasındaki yazar / çevirmen

The aim of the present study is to reveal to what extent the parallel thought systems, namely Transcendentalism and Sufism have a determining influence on The Forty Rules of Love and Aşk in the reception of the text leading to high reading and selling rates in both Turkey and in the Anglo-American world. With this aim in mind, the concept of "rewriting" (Lefevere, 1992) is taken as the wider theoretical framework of the present study which also includes other concepts such as "assumed translation" (Toury, 1995), "multilingualism" (Grutman, 2009) and "self-translation" (Popovic, 1976; Hokenson & Munson, 2007). The methodological tools to be used in the study are "operational", especially "textual linguistic norms" which were proposed by Gideon Toury (Toury, 1995) and Gerard Genette's "paratexs" (1997) together with the interviews with Kadir Yiğit Us - the translator -, Ebru Bilun Akyıldız - the photograph artist who took the photograph on the cover of Aşk - and Uğurcan Ataoğlu – the cover designer. K. Yiğit Us accepts that the Turkish text was recreated with certain preconditioned intentions. The excerpts chosen from both the English original and the Turkish translation and analyzed under the titles of additons, omissions and shifts with the aim of being more perceivable for the implied readers prove that Transcendentalism and Sufism have great influence on the productions of the texts. The interviews and textual analyses imply that Elif Şafak can be accepted as a self-translator of the Turkish text being very active in the formation of the Turkish version for the target readers' expectations and directing the process for the target readers' expectations.
