Gaziantep High School within the Educational Buildings of Gaziantep Republic Period and Restoration Proposal

With the declaration of the Republic, radical changes have been made in the education system as in many other fields. As an influx of these changes, there was a need to create new spaces. The construction activities in the new country, which comes out of a war, being within financial impossibilities, are limited. For this reason, the existing and currently used buildings in many cities of Anatolia were used for educational purposes. In Gaziantep, existing buildings were re-functionalized and used as educational purposes. New buildings were started to be built after 1942. Within the scope of this thesis, the restoration proposal was made for the oldest high school, Gaziantep High School, when examined the changing process, effects on Gaziantep and the new educational structures. In this context; the aim of the study, research methods and working methods are explained in the first part of the thesis. In the second part, the geographical location and history of Gaziantep, in the third section; the concept of education from the past to the present, the history of education and the development process of educational structures have been discussed. In the fourth chapter; educational structures built in The Pre-republican period and the Post-republican period in Gaziantep were examined; and Gaziantep Old Trade High School, Ahmet Çelebi Primary School, Male Art Institute, Akyol Primary School and Yavuzlar Primary School were examined by taking their history, plan and facade features, materials and construction systems into consideration. In the fifth chapter; Gaziantep High School, which is the main subject of the thesis, has been examined considering the history, location, plan and facade features, materials and construction system. Damage analysis, material analysis and period analysis have been made. In the sixth chapter, the restitution project for high school is discussed in the light of old photographs and data.
