The effect of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy on self-care and quality of life

This study was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study to determine the effect of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy on the self-care power and quality of life of the pregnant woman. This study was carried out with 278 spontaneously pregnant women, complaining of nausea and vomiting (NV), during 5-20 gestational week, between the ages of 18-40 who applied to the Gynecology and Obstetrics Policlinic of a training and research hospital in the Central Black Sea Region on Turkey between 01.06.2019-01.01.2020. The SF-36 Quality of Life Scale and the Exercise of Self Care Agency Scale (ESCA) were used to collect the research data. The ESCA score mean of the pregnant women participating in this study was 103,5±19,6. There was a statistically significant relationship between the mean score of the ESCA and state of needing support due to NV (p<0,05), having insufficient social support systems (p<0,01). There were statistically significant differences between some sub-dimensions of the SF-36 quality of life scale and having NV in previous pregnancy (p<0,05), needing support for NV (p<0,05), affecting daily work because of NV (p<0,05), affecting sexual life because of NV (p<0,05), the week when the NV began (p<0,05), daily routine of NV (p<0,01), duration of NV (p<0,05). It was found that %62,2 of the pregnant women was affected negatively their sexual life, their daily work was affected %42,4. As a result, it has been determined that NVP during pregnancy negatively affects the self-care power and quality of life of the pregnant women.
