Evaluation of perspectives on permanent solutions of Syrians under temporary protection in the framework of social support mechanisms

The present study aims to investigate how the perspectives of individuals of Syrian origin living under temporary protection in Türkiye shape in relation to three categorized permanent solutions: voluntary return, social integration, and resettlement, based on the existence of social support mechanisms. The research sample consists of 20 individuals under temporary protection, and the province of Bursa was selected as the sample. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants, and the data obtained were analyzed using the qualitative data analysis program MASQDA 2022. The research findings were interpreted employing a phenomenological approach. Following the internal disturbances that began in Syria, individuals in search of a secure living environment have sought refuge in Turkey, their neighboring country, since 2011. This study aims to explore the perspectives of refugees regarding permanent solution paths. In formulating policies for permanent solutions, it is imperative to respect the principle of self-determination among individuals. The research findings indicate that individuals under temporary protection do not perceive voluntary return as a viable option under current circumstances. On the other hand, those who have acquired proficiency in the Turkish language, received education in Turkey, and integrated into the registered labor market express a desire for permanent settlement within the country, thus demonstrating a propensity towards social integration. Individuals experiencing challenges in terms of employment, language acquisition, and economic stability in Turkey tend to lean towards the path of resettlement and even consider irregular migration as an alternative means to transition to a third country.
