Thermodynamic analysis of the effect of using diesel generator exhaust gases on energy saving in ship main engine preheating

Abstract (EN)

Ships have a very important share in world trade and are growing more and more. As a result of this growth, the inclusion of new ships in the maritime sector will cause more fuel consumption and emission spread in these days when our concerns are increasing. For this purpose, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has taken the issue of energy efficiency in ships more sensitively and has been encouraging activities to increase the efficient operating conditions of existing ships and to design newly built ships with higher energy efficiency. This study includes the energy savings to be obtained by utilizing the exhaust gases of the generator during the preheating process of the main engine of a RO-RO ship. The new method proposed within the scope of the thesis shows the fuel savings to be obtained as a result of the concrete data obtained from the ship in scenarios involving different operating conditions and has been examined in terms of thermodynamics. In addition, thermodynamic analyzes were applied for 2 scenarios of the ship's current operating conditions and for 3 scenarios of operating conditions including the proposed new method, using the MATLAP program. In this context, a fuel saving of 22% was achieved in the boiler throughout the port process. It has been observed that an 8% saving has been achieved for the average total fuel consumption of the ship during the port process. As a result of the applied thermodynamic analysis, it has been seen that the new models proposed for the main engine preheating system are applicable and need further development. In addition, it has been observed that with the fuel savings to be achieved, approximately 106 tons of CO2 emissions will be eliminated annually.
