A strategic decision-making approach to reduce fuel consumption in ships

Abstract (EN)

The substantial volume of global maritime trade performed through sea routes exacerbates the adverse environmental effects of vessels. The emissions from heavy fuels utilized in maritime vessels inflict considerable damage on the environment. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) laws concerning emissions from ship fuels represent a significant concern that requires to be addressed within the global maritime industry. To mitigate the detrimental impacts caused by maritime fuels and ensure sustainability, it is critical to understand the key elements influencing the consumption of fuel. The study conducted for this aim analyzed 8 primary criteria and 62 sub-criteria to determine the most significant aspects influencing the consumption of fuel in ships. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the main engine type (diesel, turbocharger...) is the most important factor affecting fuel consumption.
