Design and application of cold-ironing system for port operations of ships: The case of Trabzon port

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, the issue of supplying shore electrical energy required by ships in port operations has been examined. In this context, design of a cold-ironing (CI) system have been suggested for Trabzon Port. Suggested design has been evaluated in terms of exhaust emissions, financial issues, and human health. In the design of the CI system, the data on ship operations for 2018 and 2019 were considered. Calculations were made to determine amount of exhaust emissions and their effects, as well as the cost of coastal electrical energy and the CI system. As a result of the calculations, it has been determined that the cost of the CI system is 3.5 million $ and the total electrical power capacity is 3200 kW, the return-on-investment period is between 1.29 and 4.38 years, and a total savings of 16893821 TL can be achieved in the supply of electrical energy to ships due to the advantageous electrical energy in 2018 and 2019. In 2018 and 2019, the total fuel consumption of the ships using the Trabzon Port was calculated as 2172.4 and 1256.1 tons, respectively. As a result, it has been calculated that a total of 227.1 tons of harmful exhaust emissions and a total of 10712.7 tons of greenhouse gases were emitted directly into the atmosphere for both years. It is estimated that a total of $7654921.17 savings can be achieved in health expenditures if the CI system is activated.
