The role of psychological flexibility and values in prediting the romantic relationship satisfaction of young adults

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between psychological flexibility and values in understanding romantic relationship satisfaction in emerging adults. The participants included 431 (231 female, 200 male) emerging adults between the ages of 18-35 who had a romantic relationship. Demographic Information Form, Relationship Satisfaction Scale, Valuing Questionnaire and Psy-Flex Scale were used as data collection instruments. After Pearson correlation analysis was used to understand the relationship between relationship satisfaction, psychological flexibility, and values, hierarchical regression analysis was performed in accordance with the main purpose of the study. Demographic variables were added to the model in the first step; later, among the independent variables, psychological flexibility was added in the second step; and progress and obstruction sub-scales were added in the third step. Gender, and type of romantic relationship were entered in the first step. These variables explained approximately 6% of the total variance in romantic relationship satisfaction. The type of romantic relationship had a positive significant relationship with romantic relationship satisfaction. Secondly, psychological flexibility significantly contributed to the model and explained 11% of the total variance. Finally, in the third model, values significantly contributed to the model and explained 17% of the total variance. The progress dimension of valuing scale and psychological flexibility were significantly and positively related to romantic relationship satisfaction. The results of the research were discussed in the light of the relevant literature and suggestions were provided for future research and applications.
