Investigation of hematologic and oxidative parameters of swiss albino mice fed with genetically modified Zea mays L.

In this study, some heamatologic and oxidative parameteres of Swiss albino mice fed with genetically Modified (GM) foods were investigated. In this aim 20 Swiss albino mice (Mus. musculus var. albinos, 12–14 week old) were used as 10 male and 10 female. 4 treatment group were created as two control (5 male, 5 female) and two GM group (5 male, 5 female). During experimental period, control group mice were fed with 150 gr traditional maize and water, GM group were fed with 150 gr. GM maize and water. After experimental period blood tissues were obtained and serum protein, albümin, bilirubine, creatinine, oxidize protein (OP) levels were analysed. Liver tissues were isolated and GSH, MDA levels were investigated. At results, some alterations in protein and albümin levels of GM maize treated mice were observed, the alterations observed in albümin level were not significantly important. Bilirubin and creatinine levels of first and second generation male mice were increased compared to control and maternal groups. The increase observed in bilirubin levels were significantly important but the increase observed in creatinine levels were insignificant. The distinctive alteration in hematocrit level was observed in second generation of male mice. Insignificant alterations were observed in WBC and RBC level of GM maize treated groups. MDA and OP levels were increased and GSH level were decreased in GM maize treated groups.
