The effect of realistic mathematics education on the mathematics achievement of 6 th grade students'

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of realistic mathematics education approach on 6th grade students' achievement on integers. The study was conducted in the second semester of the 2016-2017 academic year, in which 18 students in the 6th grade were included in the experimental group and 17 students were included in the control group in Yazır Fevziye Polat Secondary School in Korkuteli, Antalya Province. At the same time, in the second semester of 2017-2018 academic years, the study was carried out with 11 students of 6th grade in the experimental group and 15 students of 6th grade in the control group with the same activities in the Dereköy Secondary School-Imam Hatip Secondary School. In this study, integers which are considered as one of the basic subjects in mathematics teaching are discussed. The teaching of the whole numbers was carried out activities in accordance with the mathematics education program of the Ministry of Education in the control group and the practices in accordance with the realistic mathematics education approach in the experimental group. The equivalence test consisting of 20 questions including 5th grade subjects was performed in order to determine whether there is a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. The questions in the equivalence test consist of DPYB exam questions that were asked between 2012 and 2016. Therefore, there is not necessity to investigate the validity and reliability of the equivalence test. Thanks to analyzes, there was no significant difference between the groups and the application phase was started. Before and after the application phase,the pre-test and post-test consisting of 20 questions about gr Integers were applied to the experimental and control groups. The independent t-test was used to determine whether there was a significant difference in the achievements of the experimental and control groups on the subject of integers according to the scores obtained from the final test. As a result of the statistics, a significant difference was found between experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group in teaching with the activities appropriate to GME(Realistic Mathematics Education) and Ministry of National Education Mathematical Curriculum in terms of integers.
