Determination of bacteriological quality of drinking water in gi̇resun

Abstract (EN)

In the present study, microbiological and physico-chemical qualities of drinking water obtained from the city of Giresun were studied. A total of 151 water samples, collected from tank and tap waters in June, July, August and September, were used as material. Microbiologically: total aerobic bacteria, mesophilic aerobic bacteria, total coliform bacteria, fecal coliform bacteria, fecal streptococci, E. coli, physico-chemically: pH value, total hardness, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, taste, odour, turbidity, sodium, potassium and biochemical oxygen demand analysis were done. The results were evaluated according to the standardization of Turkey (TS 266) (Regulation Concerning Water Intended for Human Consumption). Moreover, in this study, were investigated that resistance levels of antibiotic in gram negative bacteria isolated from water samples. A total of 250 bacteria were isolated from samples collected from different in central town. Antibiotic resistance of bacterial strains was determined by the agar diffusion test and 9 different antibiotic discs (representing 6 classes of antibiotics). Antibiotic resistance levels of isolates were determined respectively as, E (50,8%), CZ (37,2%), CTX (38,8%), CXA (33,2%), NA (32,4%), AM (27,6%), AK (12,4%), TE (30%) and C (29,6%). Moreover, 64,8% of all isolates' MAR index values were higher than 0,2. The result of this study have indicated that an important proportion of gram-negative bacteria isolated from tank and tap waters contaminated with fecal waste discharges was resistant to antibiotics and this situtiation carries a potential risk for publich health.
