Abstract (EN)

In this study, the Cyprus War and the memories of the Giresun Veterans who participated in the war are explained. Veteran's biographies, their pre-war and post-war situations are included. The Ottoman Empire's conquest of Cyprus in 1571 brought autonomy to the Greeks. As the British people had the administration there after the First World War. The Greeks created the idea of ENOSIS, which means to ensure the dominance of the lands that do not belong to them and the places where their cognates lived. The Greeks tried to receive support from the world while they were trying to implement their ENOSIS wishes by restoring to brutal methods. Turks were forced to migrate and massacred. The Greeks established the EOKA organization, and the Turks established the TMT (Turkish Resistance Organization) for their own defense. They claimed for their rights to the UN Security Council. Considering the Treaty of Lausanne, the Turks rejected the Greeks request and favored the idea of division, which was a Macmillan plan. The requests of both parties were not accepted and a joint treatment was accorded to establish the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, in which Turkey- Greece- England partnership existed. In 1963, the Greeks started to implement their plans again, violating the agreement. Peace keeping forces were dispatched to the island in 1964 but the Greek Cypriots continued their harassment until 1974. Upon the increasing incidents on the island and the coup against the President Makarios on July 15, 1974. Turks deployed soldiers to the island July 20, 1974 and August 14, 1974 stating that the situation represented ENOSIS. At the end of the war, thirty percent of the island was under the control of the Turks. İn this study, 32 Giresun veterans who crusaded in the Battle of Cyprus were interviewed and the interviews were recorded. The war memories of the veterans, their post-war psychological state, and their thoughts about the people of Cyprus are explained. The experiences of the relatives of veterans during the war, the contribution of the people living in Giresun to the war relief and the echoes of the Cyprus War in the local press were also discussed.
