Gothic film aesthetics: An analysis on b film examples

The concept of Gothic has been used with different meanings from the first century until today. Apart from denoting the Goths as a community, throughout history, various art forms have been characterized as 'gothic'. This thesis concentrates on 'gothic film', tracing the concept of gothic from is origins. Answers were sought to the questions of what features a film should have in order to be called 'gothic film', which films can be considered gothic, and to what extent gothic films were influenced by gothic art forms that preceded it. Then, in the light of Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant's views on the concept of 'sublime', a 'gothic film aesthetic' was tried to be suggested. However, considering that a significant majority of gothic films are 'B films', the unique production dynamics of B films were also taken into account and all of the films that constitute the sample of the study were selected among B-type gothic films.
