Cultural geography of the city of Gümüşhane (Based on material culture elements)

The city of Gümüşhane is located in the Eastern Black Sea subregion of the Black Sea Region. Due to its geographical position, Gümüşhane exhibits both the physical and human characteristics of the Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia. This geographical and cultural transition zone contributes to the increase in cultural diversity within the region. As a result, the city reflects the cultural features of both the Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia. The aim of this thesis is to identify the cultural values of the city of Gümüşhane and to ensure their transmission to future generations with the objective of maintaining sustainability. In the preparation phase of the thesis, a comprehensive literature review was first conducted. Following the review, field trips and observations were carried out to collect qualitative data within the research area. During this stage, material culture elements were identified in detail and subsequently examined in situ together with the local population. The data gathered during field observations were compiled into reports and then analyzed during the writing process. The compiled information was studied under the main categories of material culture shaped by human fundamental needs: housing culture, clothing culture, and gastronomy culture. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the cultural values of the city of Gümüşhane are not being adequately preserved and are on the verge of being forgotten. Consequently, it is concluded that both the forgotten and the existing values must be safeguarded and revitalized within the framework of sustainable development.
