Abstract (EN)
Decreasing amount of non-renewable energy sources in the world remains as a current problem that must be solved in architecture as in many disciplines. New solutions emerging with the developing technology also find a reflection in architecture. However, a group of smart materials have been invented by developing technology and ongoing research helping to optimize user comfort by using renewable energy sources despite decreasing non-renewable energy sources. Even though, smart materials have not yet reached widespread use, it is expected that, with the increasing knowledge and recognition on architects and designers, usage of smart materials will become prevalent. The aim of the study is to show the importance of the solar interaction of smart materials by evaluating the smart materials on the building envelope as they obtain energy from sun and provide solar control. In this context, the types and properties of smart materials activated by solar energy on building envelope are examined and the potential of smart materials is investigated. In addition, due to its edible energy potential, especially the ways of using solar interactive smart materials are introduced. Thus, it is aimed to guide local designers on usage and selection of smart materials. In this scope, 59 sample buildings using smart materials were examined. Besides, the effect of smart materials on energy consumption and user comfort was evaluated. It has been observed that the use of these materials on building envelope contributes to energy efficiency, energy production and energy conservation. It has also been determined that smart materials improve thermal and visual comfort conditions for the user and improves the air quality. As a result, use of smart materials on existing and projected buildings should be increased due to contribution to energy efficiency and comfort conditions, besides designers should be encouraged in this context since Turkey has a great potential on renewable solar energy sources.
