Determination of bisphenol-a levels in some fish species and mussels caught in the Southeast Black Sea

Abstract (EN)

The additives that included in plastics, pose a hazard to the environment because they are usually not bonded to the polymers chemically and they are biologically active. Bisphenol A (BPA), which used to improve the mechanical properties of plastics, that not exist in nature and defined as an endocrine disruptor, is one of the most important additives and takes place near the top in terms of production and consumption amounts. Within the scope of this study, BPA levels were determined in biota samples at stations determined in two cities with different population densities (Trabzon and Giresun) located on the Southeastern Black Sea coast, in locations exposed to anthropogenic effects at different intensities. In both provinces mussel samples were taken from 4 different stations and fish samples were taken from 2 regions. BPA concentrations in the samples were determined by LC-MS/MS device after solid phase extraction. The average BPA concentrations (ng/g dry weight) in mussels were 0.31±0.11, in whiting were 3.77±2.58 and in red mullet were 6.56±4.11. Considering BPA acceptable daily intake (ADI: 0.2 ng/kg body weight) by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), it has been determined that consumption of fish and mussels poses a risk.
