Our Weekly Illustrated Paper (1924) and Flag of Scholars (1925) Magazines (Transcription, examination)

The child, who is in the subject position with its unique characteristics in one of the most important phases of life, where the basic values, behaviors and beliefs are acquired, is a being in need a touch. One method of to make this touch is to use the literature. Literature is a means of the child's process of gaining experience in the world he builds away from the monotonous reality. Children's literature, which is based on the child, aims to create a field of education for the child with its unique approach based on the basic principles of literature. Magazines and newspapers, used in children's literature, are considered as the materials especially prepared for this purpose. They provide a holistic development chance for the child with their rich genre and visual content, purposes, appeal to different age groups, easy accessibility, etc. The study, which focuses on the essential terms to begin with, examines the children's magazines; Our Weekly Illustrated Paper, published in Istanbul since 13 November, 1924 with seven issues, and Flag of Scholars, published in Istanbul since 24 February, 1925 with six issues. All issues of both publications were translated into today's Turkish and texts are classified according to their text types and evaluated in terms of their messages. As a result, the indexed children's publications Our Weekly Illustrated Paper and Flag of Scholars, are considered as rich in terms of text types and visuals. It is also determined that the contents with positive and negative messages were prepared under the influence of the social and political situation of the period. Thus, the study aims to contribute to the field by comparing the two different approaches of magazine publishing.
