The women in Halide Edib Adıvar's stories

Halide Edib Adıvar(1882- 1964) was an author who handled with the woman issues and mentioned about the social problems on woman in her stories. Before Halide Edib, in the period of Tanzimat, there were male authors and subsequent to them some women authors such like Fatma Aliye Hanım (1862-1936), Emine Semiye Hanım (1868-1944) and Güzide Sabri Aygün (1883-1946) whose works are about the position of the woman in the society. In the essays and stories which written for newspapers and periodicals by Halide Edib, the woman issues have been processed and have been discussed from a daily, political or a communal life perspective with a realistic language. In this thesis, the ways of how Halide Edib was handled with the social problems of the woman and how she did create the woman characters in her stories and essays are analyzed. The transformations of the women characters in her stories under her works titled as Harap Mabetler (1910), Dağa Çıkan Kurt (1922) and Kubbede Kalan Hoş Sada (1974) are researched by concerning to the political, the communal and the cultural diversities in the historical process of the woman. The woman issues that she discussed thorough her essays is considered as whether she reflected them to the characters in her stories or not. Therefore the bonds between the topics of essays and stories can be compared. Within the modernization and the political conditions of the time, there is a determination in which the roles of the women in Halide Edib Adıvar's stories are altered from a desperate and emotionally weak type to eventually powerful and idealistic woman type after its dilemma due to the modernism and the wars.
