The relationship of Dietary Inflammatory Index with liver enzymes elevation in patients with hepatic involvement glycogen storage

This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of patients diagnosed with glycogen storage disease (GSD) with hepatic involvement and to determine the effect of the inflammatory effect of the diet on liver enzymes. The study was conducted on 40 patients, 22 (55%) males and 18 (45%) females, between the ages of 2-18, who were followed up with the diagnosis of Hepatic Glycogen Storage Disease at the Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolism Polyclinic of Çukurova University Training and Research Hospital. has been made. In terms of kinship status, 72.5% of the participants stated that they were cousins, while 27.5% stated that they did not have such a kinship relationship. According to Disease Types, it was stated that 20% of the participants were diagnosed with Type Ia, 27.5% with Type III, 10% with Type VI, 35% with Type IX and 7.5% with Type XI. At baseline and at the 3rd month, patients were given dietary recommendations that would reduce the dietary inflammatory index (DII) score. DII scores were calculated with the information obtained from the food consumption record and food frequency forms. In the baseline evaluation, the height Z-score of the patients was -1.55±2.50 standard deviation score (SDS), at the end of the study it was -1.45±1.84 SDS and the lean muscle mass was 25.60±13.61 kg at the beginning. At the end of the study, it was found to be 26.17±12.64 kg. The increase in height Z-score and lean muscle mass was found to be statistically significant (p˂0.05, p=0.001, respectively). It was determined that the DII score did not differ between the groups during the study depending on the use of slow-release carbohydrate supplements (raw corn starch or glycosade) (p>0.05). After consuming an antiinflammatory diet, the decrease in aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and triglyceride (TG) levels of the patients at 6 months compared to baseline was not statistically significant, while the decrease in cholesterol level was significant (p<0.05). In our study, it was observed that the diet designed accordingly had statistically significant positive effects on growth, lean body mass, liver function tests and hyperlipidemia in GDH patients of different subtypes. It is thought that at the end of the study, diets to be created with DII evaluations in a larger number/subtypes of patients will provide clearer information about the direct/indirect effects of DII on the course of the disease.
