Gender role attitudes of male academic and administrative staff working in Hitit University

Egalitarian changes of men's in gender roles is important for increasing the status of women in society. The aim of this study was to determine gender role attitudes of male academic and administrative staff working in Hitit University. This descriptive research was completed with the participation of 301 academic and administrative staffs in Hitit University between September 1-December 31, 2017. A questionnaire form consisting of 64 questions was created to collect the data. Gender Role Attitude Scale was used to determine gender role attitudes of the participants. The data were evaluated by SPSS 22.0 program. In analysis, independent samples t-test, One-Way Anova (Post hoc-Tukey) and Pearson Correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. p<0,05 was considered statistically significant. In the study group, 54,2% were between the 30-39 age groups, 78,7% were married and 89% had university and higher education. The mean score of the Gender Role Attitude Scale was 131,72±21,80 in the whole group. There was no significant difference according to age groups (p>0,05). Gender role attitudes were more egalitarian among higher educated, academic and unmarried staffs (p<0,05). The number of siblings of the participants was found to be effective on gender role attitudes (p<0,05). Companionate marriage and the age of marriages (both husbands and wifes) were the other factors that changed the gender role attitudes of the participants in the egalitarian way (p<0,05). Gender roles attitudes were found to be more egalitarian among participants with working spouses (p <0,05). The total scores didn't differ significantly in terms of the child's gender, long-term location and being witness to violence in childhood (p> 0,05). Gender role attitudes were found to be more egalitarian in those with good economic status and health perception (p<0,05).
