Abstract (EN)
This study examines the diversity of critical responses to Hüseyin Cahit Yalçın's aesthetic articles published in the Servet-i Fünun magazine in the early 20th century, emphasizing the significant role of Yalçın, a prominent figure in Turkish literature, in shaping modern Turkish literature and aesthetic thought. His writings, characterized by an innovative style and progressive ideas, sparked significant debates among his contemporaries, reflecting broader cultural and intellectual changes of the period. The research focuses on a comprehensive analysis of critiques directed towards Yalçın's aesthetic views, drawing from contemporary sources, responses from colleagues, and subsequent academic evaluations. These criticisms are contextualized within the socio-political and cultural dynamics of the Ottoman Empire marked by rapid modernization and Westernization efforts. The study not only explores how Yalçın's writings in Servet-i Fünun contributed to the evolution of Turkish literature but also investigates the debates surrounding the role of art, morality, and national identity in a society undergoing profound transformation. Methodologically, the thesis adopts a historical-critical approach analyzing primary and secondary sources to develop a multifaceted understanding of the reception of Hüseyin Cahit Yalçın's works. This approach allows for an intricate exploration of the interaction between literary innovation, cultural criticism, and socio-political change. By arguing that critiques of Yalçın's works were not merely literary but deeply intertwined with the ideological and cultural debates of the time, the thesis highlights the role of literary discourse in societal development. This study contributes to a broader understanding of the cultural and societal role of Ottoman thought and literature in fostering cultural change. By examining the critical reception of Hüseyin Cahit Yalçın's works, it sheds light on the complexities of literary modernization in the Ottoman Empire and provides insights into the lasting impact of literary criticism on shaping cultural narratives and national identity.
