The study of poetic necessity is one of the fundamental topics in the principles of grammar, which had a significant impact on grammatical disputes among scholars. This study has two aspects: foundational and applied. The foundational aspect focuses on defining the term "necessity," mentioning the scholarly disagreements about it, and presenting the predominant opinion that defines it as: "what is found in poetry that has no equivalent in prose, contrary to those who restrict it by saying the poet had no alternative." It clarifies Ibn Hisham's choice in defining it, aligning with the predominant opinion. The applied aspect primarily examines Ibn Hisham AlAnsari's book "Awdaḥ al-Masalik ila Alfiyyat Ibn Malik" and his other grammatical works, aiming to extract Ibn Hisham's choices regarding the necessity in poetic evidence that deviates from linguistic rules. The study includes sixty-six poetic evidences judged by Ibn Hisham as necessary either explicitly or implicitly. These evidences are categorized into fifty-eight related to branches of grammar and eight related to morphology. The study clearly elucidates Ibn Hisham's views, sometimes referencing his other works, mentioning scholarly disagreements, their evidence, and identifying the most credible views. The study is not concerned with the general concept of necessity but specifically with what Ibn Hisham explicitly addressed in his book "Awdaḥ al-Masalik.
