The relation of internal migration and public investments: Turkey example

Migrations are population movements that start with the history of humanity and continue uninterruptedly. Especially with the industrial revolution, it gained speed. Behind the individuals' decision to migrate; There are factors such as violent events, economic reasons, cultural - social reasons, and climatic conditions. Migration movements can be international as well as take place in different regions within the same country. Internal migrations within the same country are due to the different levels of development and income within the country. One of the important objectives of public investments is to meet the needs of the regions while minimizing the development between the regions. Although internal migration in Turkey is based on different reasons in terms of periods, the direction of internal migration is generally from rural to urban areas. Internal migration is emphasized in this study since there are a lot of external migration studies and there are not enough studies on internal migration. In the study; The historical development of internal migration in Turkey, its causes, population structure and scope of public investments, sectoral distribution, and the provinces with the most public investments were examined with the data between 2015-2019 and the relationship between internal migration and public investments were examined by document analysis method. As a result of the findings obtained for this study, it can be said that the increase or decrease in public investments does not affect the net migration rates as a result of the evaluation of the net migration rate and public investments on the basis of the 10 provinces that received the most public investment between 2015-2019. Considering the other causes of internal migration, it is thought that control over internal migration cannot be achieved with only public investments, and sociological reasons of migration should be investigated in detail in order to take precautions regarding internal migration.
