Geometry education in under graduate elementary mathematics teacher education programme: Examination of applications and students' views

The aim of research is to investigate and evaluate elementary mathematics teacher education students' views on content and pedagogy of geometry course. The geometry course content was designed and delivered by the lecturer of the course in a different way comparing to what is recommended by Higher Education Council to implement in education faculty. The sample of the research consist of twelve students who enrolled for the geometry course and registered elementary mathematics education program in Bayburt University at spring term of 2013-2014 academic year. Phenomology approach, as a qualitative research method was used in the research. Data consist of semi-structured interviews, observation notes were taken by researcher during the semester, project assignments, midterm and final examination papers of students and interview forms done at beginning and end of the semester. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using content analysis and other data that is used to look at the validity and reliability of data. In the findings, although the students had difficulty in the course because they were not accustomed to implemented method, they liked it. They start thinking and reasoning by the method and content, begin to reconstruct geometry knowledge by reasoning. Most importantly, development of geometrical thinking has occurred. In the lights of the findings, by the research discussion on content and pedagogy of geometry course given in undergraduate in education faculty is started. In order to continue the discussion, done new researches and compared the results of them were suggested. Key Words: Undergraduate Geometry Course, Content of the Course and Teaching Approach
