Social and cultural sustainability and perception effect of functional change in imaginary buildings - Cappadocia surroundings caravanserais case

Sustainable arcitecture is an approach that aims to minimize environmental impacts, and protect natural resources. This approach includes a strategy that is important in terms of using resources efficiently and protecting cultural values as a result of extending the life of structures that have lost their original function by changing their function, rather than building new structures. On the other hand, the sociocultural dimension of sustainable architecture constitutes a perspective that evaluates the role and impact of structures in society. Concepts such as social sharing, solidarity, inclusion strengthen the bond that people have with each other and between the structure and the person, protect the cultural values that society contains and contribute to its continuity. In this study, the functional change of the buildings with imaginative value due to the loss of their original function was examined in terms of social and cultural sustainability, and the effect of the selected caravanserais in the Cappadocia region, which underwent a change in function, on the user perception was discussed. It is aimed to provide a framework in order to understand how the experiences we live through buildings are shaped in the perceptual process in the context of sociocultural sustainability. It is aimed to find the difference that will be revealed as a result of the relationship between the functional change of the caravanserais and the original function of the building, the effect of the new function added to the building on the perception of the user and the emotional connection with the help of questionnaires.
