Examining elt teachers' self-efficacy levels and preferred language teaching methods

Abstract (EN)

In this study it was tried to examine English Teachers' self-efficacy perceptions and preferred language teaching methods. Target population of the study consists of 513 English Teachers and the sample of the study consists of 212 (134 female, 78 male) English teachers who work in Karaköprü and Haliliye counties. In the study, English Language Teachers' Sense of Self-Effıcacy Scale (ELTSES)" was used to measure the English teachers' self-efficacy perceptions. Additionally "Preferred Teaching Method Questionnaire" containing 39 items from 5 different foreign language teaching methods was used to determine the preferred foreign language teaching methods in the study. To anlalyze the data; descriptive analysis, frequency (f), percentage (%), mean ( ), independent sample test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were applied. Bonferroni and Dunnett's C tests were used as post-hoc tests to determine groups in which significant differences occured. At the end of the study, it was seen that the English Teachers' self-efficacy perceptions differ significantly, according to the school type, seniority, weekly course load and English preparatory class variables but it doesn't differ significantly according to gender, graduated high school, graduated faculty and in-service training. In addition, it was seen that English teachers preferred foreign language teaching methods in the same way according to seniority, type of school in which they were employed, type of faculty graduated and in-service training status. However, it was confirmed that "male" teachers, "not studied in the preparation class" teachers and "less than 20 hours of lessons" teachers; prefer to use the grammar translation method.
