Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between the levels of narcissism and self-confidence of the university students that use the Instagram. For this purpose, a sample size of 400 participants was selected among students attending Doğuş University. Of these 400 participants, 242 (60.5%) were female and 158 (39.5%) were male. In this project, Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory-Short Form (FFNI-SF), Self Confidence Scale and Socio-demographic Information Form were used to collect data. SPSS v.21 statistics package was utilized to analyze the data. Pearson correlation analysis was used to measure the correlation between the research variables. In cases where there were no significant differences among the groups that participated in the study, independent sampling t test was utilized in accordance with a normal distribution. In other cases, Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests were applied. Research showed a significant difference in Instagram usage variables in relation to the genders of the sample group. According to data collected, there is a significant correlation between FFNI-SF scores and its subgroups when tested for gender. However, the Self Confidence Scale did not show a significant difference related to gender. Based on another data, there is a significant correlation between the time spent on the Instagram and the entitlement and cynicism/distrust subtypes of FFNI. However, there is a negative correlation between time spent on the Instagram and the inner self-confidence subtype of the Self Confidence Scale. Results of the study also showed that there is a negative correlation between university students that aspire to people's lives on the Instagram and inner self confidence – a subtype of Self Confidence scale. Based on the reaction university students displayed when their postings did not receive a "like" or a satisfying amount of it, there is a significant correlation between FFNI and its subtypes; and also a significant correlation between Self Confidence Scale and its subtype, the inner self confidence. Compared to the students who accept "friend requests" from unknown contacts and those who do not, a significant difference has been found in the scores concerning the following subtypes of FFNI: exhibitionism, manipulativeness and exploitativeness. A significant correlation has been observed between the scores obtained from FFNI and its subtypes for Instagram users who seek peer and general contacts admiration. Overall results show that, there is a positive correlation between the scores the sample group obtained from the Five Factor Narcissism Inventory and its sub groups, and Self Confidence Scale and its subgroups respectively.
