Islamists' view of the idea of nationalism: The case of Haksöz Magazine

Nationalism has emerged as a significant ideology in the formation of nation-states and social identities in the modern era. This ideology, shaped in the aftermath of the French Revolution, is rooted in the concepts of national sovereignty, independence, and identity. Inconnection with modernity, nationalism has been influenced by various intellectual movements. Philosophical current ssuch as Neo-Classicism and Romanticism provided the theoretical framework for nationalism, while economic and social Dynamics played a role in its dissemination. Through out history, nationalism has interacted with other ideologies such as capitalism, socialism, and liberalism. Marxist perspectives regard nationalism as a tool of the bourgeoisie, while liberal approaches view it as a transitional phase toward a global order. Thinkers like Anthony D. Smith and Benedict Anderson have analyzed nationalism from different perspectives, emphasizing both its historical and imagined dimensions, and its impact on modern societies. Nationalism is a multifaceted ideology capable of producing both liberating and oppressive effects. On the one hand, it promises independence to individuals and nations, while on the other, it can pave the way for conflicts and mechanisms of subjugation. After the French Revolution, the concept of national sovereignty spread across Europe, playing a central role in the construction of rapidly emerging nation-states. In particular, the industrialization, urbanization, and economic transformations of the 19th century accelerated the spread of nationalism. Modernization processes made nationalism an essential tool for creating social identity and collective consciousness. However, significant ideological and practical distinction shave emerged among the various forms of nationalism. Haksöz Magazine is noted for its critical stance toward nationalist ideologies in Turkey. It high lights the incompatibility between Turkish nationalism and Islamic values while examining the efforts to synthesize Islamism and nationalism in Turkey.
