Stabilization of clayey soil with calcium lignosulfonate

Abstract (EN)

Problematic soils are encountered during the construction process of many buildings. In case of encountering such problematic soils, one of two methods is generally applied. It can be executed using techniques including removal / replacement and soil stabilization. In many projects, it is not possible to change the construction site. For this reason, soil stabilization techniques are often used. In this thesis, it is aimed to improve a clayey soil with calcium lignosulfonate and to examine the improvement results. For this purpose, a number of experimental studies have been carried out. Within the scope of the experimental study, soil samples were taken from a field located in Kırklareli city center and brought to Kırklareli University Geotechnical Laboratory for experimental studies. First, the geotechnical properties of the soil sample were determined. In order to improve the strength properties of the soil sample whose geotechnical properties were determined, calcium lignosulfonate was added to the soil sample at different rates. The amount of calcium lignosulfonate was determined as 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% of the dry weight of the soil. In addition, in order to examine the change depending on the curing time, mixture samples were prepared at different curing times, with the longest 365 days. As a result of the experiments, it was observed that there was no significant change in the optimum water content and maximum dry unit volume weight values when calcium lignosulfonate was added to the soil. In order to determine the strength properties, unconfined compressive strength and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests were carried out. As a result of the strength tests, it has been clearly demonstrated that the unconfined compressive strength and CBR values increase with increasing curing time. It was observed that the unconfined compressive strength values increased up to 10 times compared to the natural soil sample, while the CBR values increased up to 26 times compared to the natural soil sample. With the studies carried out within the scope of the thesis, it has been clearly seen that calcium lignosulfonate can be used in soil improvement.
