Abstract (EN)

Public sapces are those in which individuals can maintain their social lives and develop communications. When the potential and capacity of public spaces are measured, they are evaluated through the urban identity and environmental elements that constitute the urban fabric. In the policy efforts to protect and develop public spaces, some major elements such as readibility, perceptibility, spatial character, diversity, durableness, urban image and identity have become prominent. In that sense, the public spaces in the Büyükdere Coastel Area of Sarıyer, Istanbul was selected as the research area in this study. Surveys were conducted to the 200 participants who use the Büyükdere Coastal Area and spatial analyses were conducted for the public spaces. Considering the socio-demographic characteristics of the area, the survey findings were analyzed based on accessibility, livability, and sensorial compatibility. The coastal public spaces in Büyükdere Coastal Area were evaluated in terms of landscape design, and based on the findings of the analyses, policy recommendations were provided to protect and develop public spaces.
