Production of flood inundation maps with 1 and 2 dimensional integrated hydraulic model in Kemalpaşa (Artvin) district

Abstract (EN)

Floods, one of the most common natural disasters around the world, have devastating effects as they cause serious economic damage and deaths. In our country, after earthquakes, flood is the natural disaster that causes the most loss of life and property damage as well. Predicting floods is very important in terms of preventing economic damages and loss of lives. With the development of technology, many flood modeling software has been developed for determining where, how much and how many meters deep the water will be covered in a possible flood. In this study, flood analyzes were made for Çam, Karaosmaniye and Köprücü Streams in Kemalpaşa district of Artvin province based on the Q50, Q100, Q500 and Q1000 flood return discharges and flood inundation areas were determined. While preparing the geometric data required for flood modeling and transforming the results into maps was done with ArcGIS software, the hydraulic modeling was performed with HEC-RAS software. As a result of the modeling, the flood inundation and flood depth maps were produced for different flood return discharges. Accordingly, it was determined that the maximum water height in the study area of the relevant flood return discharges was between 4,316 m and 5,244 m, while the total flood inundation area was between 148,800.12 m2 and 333,167.96 m2 and the number of buildings affected by the flood was between 41 and 95. It is aimed that the produced maps might form a basis for the measures to be taken to prevent possible floods and/or minimize their damages in the study area.
