Reading the narratives of national tours as urban experience through Varlık Magazine

The thesis, which focuses on narratives within the relationship between architecture and literature, emphasizes the instructive value of travel while addressing urban experience narratives. The aim of this thesis is to understand how cities are imagined through narratives. In this context, Varlık magazine, distinguished by being the only periodical that has continued publication since its first issue, has been considered a significant source for accessing urban experience narratives. In the methodology, a three-stage narrative reading model consisting of "Collection, Analysis, and Presentation" is proposed. Varlık magazine is examined with the narrative reading model and as a result of this reading, the narratives are re-represented as maps. As a result, the thesis seeks to contribute to architectural knowledge by revealing the potential of narrative while emphasizing the experience of place. In the General Information chapter of the thesis, the aim, problem, scope, research material, methodology, and the structural framework of the thesis are presented. In Previous Studies I, the theoretical background of the thesis is elaborated, while in Previous Studies II, Varlık magazine is examined and the narrative reading model is developed and applied to the narratives. In the Findings, the facts and maps revealed through the narrative reading model are presented and analyzed; in the Conclusions and Suggestions, evaluations are carried out in line with the research problem and aim of the study. In this context, the thesis seeks to validate the hypothesis that "Narrative plays a role in the representation and understanding of cities through codes constructed with images."
