Abstract (EN)

Decision-making processes related with the physical arrangements and the urban form affect the city's social structure at a certain extent. In return, social transformations most obviously take the stage on the public spaces of cities that are open-to-all spaces of urban culture and are the main reason why cities define spaces of freedom. Besides the direct relationship it establishes with the public spaces of the city, the public realm is an intangible concept shaped by how the urbanites develop their communication and sharing. The public realm and urbanity take shape with the vitality and diversity of everyday activities. Sakarya Pedestrian Area, located in the very center of Ankara, has been subject to apparent shifts of the central city. Yet, this area has been defining publicness since its formation with the semi-private and semi-public recreational, cultural, and entertainment activities that it incorporates. At the same time, it is a space of political actions, in which individuals collectively manifest their opinions and make their voices heard. This thesis aims to investigate the development of this area from a residential neighborhood to a vibrant node of activity, that has a particular place for the city's urban culture, that is to say, urbanity.
