Abstract (EN)

Cities have undergone transformations for various reasons since the time of their establishment until our day and are continuing to do so. The conditions of the world that changed after the Industrial Revolution have affected cities as well as many other areas of life. Population has started to increase in cities that have become more industrialized. As a result problems such as unplanned urbanization, squatter development and insufficiency of residences have come about. The increase of population in Turkey has started in the 1950s during when industrialization increased. Primarily Istanbul along with many other big cities have continuously received migration starting from the 1950s until today. Population increase has almost affected all cities. Unplanned urbanization has started in cities that were not ready for such an increase in population. Urban transformation has become a must as a result of the unplanned urbanization. The study area, Gaziosmanpaşa district has received continuous migration since the 1950's and as a result squatter neighborhoods have been established in Gaziosmanpaşa. Today, urban transformation work is ongoing in 11 neighborhoods of the district. One of these neighborhoods, Sarıgöl, has received intense migration since the 1950's and today it has become a squatter neighborhood. Unplanned urbanization and infrastructure problems are at a maximum at the Sarıgöl Neighborhood and talk of urban transformation in the neighborhood has started in 2005. Nothing has been done apart from demolishing a few houses since 2005. A comprehensive urban transformation project has started in 2012. When we consider Urban Transformation from a geographer's perspective, our main objective was to examine the social and spatial changes in the Sarıgöl Neighborhood. To this end, 250 surveys and interviews have been carried out in the Sarıgöl Neighborhood during the study. The results have been uploaded to the computer via SPSS 19 software and they have been evaluated using straight and cross table analyses.
