Abstract (EN)

Urban regeneration is carried out in order to raise living standards as a solution to various urban problems caused by changes in urban parts due to physical, social and economic factors over time. It is seen that these implementations, which are realised in many cities of Turkey, differ in terms of purpose, criteria and the way they are handled compared to the Western countries where they originated. This process, which is reduced to the regeneration of physical space, brings along various problems when it is implemented without being considered as a whole. However, urban regeneration is a comprehensive form of intervention that should be understood and implemented not only in its physical approach, but also in all its approaches where the social, economic and cultural structure is taken into consideration in order to ensure the spatial and social integrity and sustainability of the city. The study aims to evaluate three urban regeneration projects in Trabzon, namely Zağnos and Tabakhane Valleys and Çömlekçi Urban Regeneration Projects, within the framework of the principles of urban regeneration in the West. In this context, the principles and parameters that were determined by analysing the regeneration practices in the West within the scope of the dimensions of urban regeneration were determined through literature research. Technical data such as plans, architectural projects, reports, etc. pertaining to the areas were obtained from the municipalities, and on-site inspections, observations and findings were made in the work areas. By evaluating the transformation practices in Trabzon in terms of physical, social, economic and governance approaches within the framework of the determined criteria, the importance of addressing the multidimensional urban regeneration in a holistic manner has been emphasised. The study will shed light on how and according to which principles the future urban regeneration practices should be handled and will contribute to the formation of more livable cities.
