Investigation of the impact of urban green areas on water quality

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted in order to determine the effects of urban green areas on water quality. A vegetation cover affects the surface flow and water quality parameters after the current rainfall. It is important to investigate in which direction the vegetation cover in urban green areas affects the quality parameters in precipitation waters. For this reason, knowing the water quality values in the watershed and urban green space has an important place in order to prevent future water problems, improve water quality and ensure the continuity of water resources. The research was conducted in two different areas at the Karadeniz Technical University Kanuni campus. In the first of the study areas, each of which is 100 m2, peanut pine (Pinus Pinea L.) and in the other, the common yew (Taxus Baccata L.) the dominant is vegetation. In the study; rainwater falling into the open area, rainwater hitting the vegetation and rainwater infiltrating were collected. Some water quality parameters (pH, amount of suspended solids, electrical conductivity, total amount of dissolved solids, ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, chlorine) were analyzed monthly in the laboratory environment and recorded for 12 months. The pH value of the average annual precipitation falling on the open area was calculated as 6.2. This value shows us that the precipitation falling on a yearly basis is acidic in character. The fact that the structure of the land where the study was carried out was not completely natural, that it was carried out on a filled-in land and that there was a campus very close to the land was effective in the elemental measurements.
