Landfill site selection in Trabzon city using spatial and multicriteria decision analysis based methodology

Within the scope of this study, suitable solid waste disposal sites were determined for Trabzon province by using spatial analysis techniques of geographical information systems and analytical hierarchy process (AHP), which is one of the multi-criteria decision making analysis, and evaluations were made in these suitable sites thanks to the field observations While using the spatial analysis techniques of geographic information systems (GIS), firstly the literature related to the selection of solid waste landfill was evaluated, the effective parameters in the selection of the appropriate area were revealed, and the suitable parameters for the province of Trabzon were determined among the determined parameters. In accordance with the literature, the study area is limited to cover areas closer to 30 km from the city center, taking into account the requirement that the economic maximum transport distance should not be more than 30 km. While preparing the maps, the weight percenst of the layers and the scores of the layer subgroups were determined using matrixes prepared using AHP. When the solid waste landfill compliance map was evaluated, 10 different suitable areas were determined in the study area. In the study, it is recommended to perform field observations for areas determined using the landfill suitability map, reuse the AHP method by using parameters that cannot be evaluated while applying GIS techniques, taking into account parameters such as local geological factors, mass movement and flood risk, cost and public attitude while creating the matrix. Detailed geotechnical studies with in-situ tests should be performed in the appropriate area in the study. Key Words: Analytical Hierarchy, GIS, Sanitary Landfilling, Trabzon, Site Selection
