Solutions proposed for the problems encountered in the preservation of historical settings due to the functional ageing and change : Ortahisar case study

SUMMARY SOLUTIONS PROPOSED FOR THE PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN THE PRESERVATION OF HISTORICAL SETTINGS DUE TO THE FUNCTIONAL AGEING AND CHANGE : ORTAHtSAR CASE STUDY The concept of preservation has gradually gained importance in our society, and noteworthy steps have been taken about in the preservation of cultural heritage in recent years. These approaches have generally been held at the visual level and cultural changes in social life have not been taken into consideration in the preservation attempts. Adhoc and improper adaptations on spatial organizations done by users in order to keep up with the contemporary needs, have been negleted in these buildings. The essence of this study is to emphasize this indispensable spatial adaptations and the necessity of this criterion in preservational approaches. This dissertation consist of five chapters. The first part is the introduction that explains the scope of the study and the general aspects of preservation. In the second chapter physical and social problems established by a case study are elaborately dealt with. The third chapter examines spatial problems caused by cultural changes, and the forth chapter deals with the related laws and regulations and discusses the proposals made by other researchers. The last chapter is the conclusion that points out the necessity of participation of users, during realization of preservative approaches. The dissertation concludes by proposing and integrated and holistic preservation program which aims at utilizing detailed physical and social analyses in the historical settings to be preserved.
