Investigation of the contribution of the vocabulary of Kral Şakir picture book series to Turkish teaching

The vocabulary of a language, the most basic element of communication, is a signal of how strong, developed and rich that language is. Having rich vocabulary of persons in their mother tongue enables them to be more successful in areas such as understanding, expression, self-expression, social communication, academic and scientific competence. The transfer of vocabulary to persons is provided by listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In this direction, vocabulary studies in Turkish language teaching should be organised in a planned and programmed way and should be done with different methods and techniques. The role of texts and books in enriching vocabulary, which is one of the important goals in teaching Turkish, is very important. For this reason, it is important to scan, determine and interpret the vocabulary of the books written by different authors. This study aims to determine the vocabulary of the 13-book Kral Şakir Picture Book Series written by author Varol Yaşaroğlu and to determine its contribution to Turkish language teaching. For this purpose, idioms, proverbs, relationship words, stereotypes, doublings, terms, foreign words, reflected words, slang words and proper names have been identified from the books. The identified elements have been transferred to tables with their frequency and page numbers and exemplified with their usage in the books. The study, which is based on the survey method, consists of four chapters: In the first part, information about the author Varol Yaşaroğlu and Kral Şakir Picture Book Series is given. In the second chapter, the concepts of language, mother tongue and mother tongue teaching are explained. In the third chapter, vocabulary and vocabulary elements are emphasised. In the fourth part, the vocabulary of the analysed books is presented in categories. The findings, inferences and recommendations made on the findings are also included in this section. In the study, the contribution of the vocabulary of the analysed books to Turkish language teaching is revealed in terms of vocabulary elements. In the Discussion, Conclusion and Suggestions section, the numbers obtained from the study were included and the data were interpreted.
