Investigation of number sense skills of students education in rural areas and city centers

In this study, it was aimed to examine the number sense skills of students studying in rural areas and city centers. The survey method, which is one of the quantitative methods, was used in the research. The sample of the research consists of 721 primary school seventh grade students studying in Antalya in the 2021-2022 academic year, 329 of whom are in rural areas and 392 in the city center, selected by stratified sampling method. A valid and reliable Number Sense Test (SHT) was developed as a data collection tool to measure and compare students' number sense skills. SPSS 26 program was used in the analysis of the data. Frequency, mean, percentage, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk normality tests and Mann-Whitney U Test were used. According to the findings obtained as a result of the research, it was seen that the number sense skills of the 7th grade primary school students were at a low level. While the component in which the students used the number sense skills the most was the component of "understanding the meanings of numbers", the component in which they used the number sense skills the least was the component of "separating and recombining the numbers". No significant difference was found according to the gender of the students' number sense skills. It has been determined that there is a significant difference in the number sense skills of the students in terms of their education in rural areas and in the city center. This difference is in favor of students studying in the city center.
