Analysis of settlement names in Ağrı in terms of cultural geography

Abstract (EN)

The province of Ağrı is located in the Upper Murat Van Section of the Eastern Anatolia Region. The area, which has been under the influence of Turkish-Islamic civilization for about a thousand years, is located in the east of Turkey today and continues to exist as a border province. The province of Ağrı, located on the historical Silk Road route, has been under the influence of many civilizations throughout history and has a rich and deep-rooted culture with influences from all of them. This study named analysis of settlement names in Ağrı province in terms of cultural geography; In addition to being the subject of toponymy research, which is one of the sub-branches of linguistics, it also enters the fields of study of ethnography, history, historical geography and cultural geography. In the study, the old and new names of the villages in Ağrı were discussed together and the effect of human space interaction on place names was tried to be analyzed. Content analysis technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this study on the place names of Ağrı province and its villages. The obtained printed and electronic resources were analyzed, and then the geographical, human and economic characteristics of the villages were evaluated. n this context, it has been determined that the place names of 562 village settlements in Ağrı Merkez, Diyadin, Doğubayazıt, Eleşkirt, Hamur, Patnos, Taşlıçay and Tutak districts were named due to their historical, human and economic characteristics as well as their natural geographical features.
